On November 13th the Evergreen High School Interactors accompanied some of Maren’s Kids to Go Paint. Perhaps, you might not be familiar with this program for special needs children, or with Interact?

The EHS Interact Club has over 60 members and is growing. These wonderful high schoolers meet almost every week, in what could be their free time, to plan and coordinate, "Service Above Self." Interact is a Rotary International Club "for youth ages 12-18 who want to connect with others in their community or school. Interact club members have fun while carrying out service projects and learning about the world.

While Interact clubs receive guidance from individual Rotary clubs, they govern and support themselves." Our club buys the numerous pizza's that the teenage consume during this time. ;-)

Since 1997 Evergreen Park & Recreation District's (EPRD) Special Needs Program has been coordinated by Maren Schreiber. This remarkable

lady has created an amazing program that "contributes to the growth and development of persons with developmental disabilities of all ages, and provides familial support. It increases their opportunities to participate in community, recreation, leisure and cultural programs, as well as activities to build daily living skills. Programs and services help prepare persons who are disabled to become as socially, emotionally, and intellectually independent as possible. Offerings include camps and specialty classes such as therapeutic horseback riding, golf, bowling, track, group and private swimming lessons, and more."

Maren’s kids decorated 11 special Thanksgiving plates. Eighteen Interactors participated with them in the event. They then went for a walk up to the Evergreen dam and back. Fun was had by one and all. A huge Thank You! to Ron Catterson, who sent the information for this article, and who spends many hours enriching the lives of these potential Rotarians! Ron sends a special thank you to the Community Service Committee who paid for all the expenses for this outing. Be looking for this article and pictures of the event on our website.
